M. Young
I paint moments where intimacy intersects with transaction. My work focuses on gestures, partial bodies, and close-in spaces in which something has just occurred or is about to be acknowledged. These scenes resist clear narratives, instead holding tension between care and control, generosity and obligation.
The figures I depict are often men, rendered not as stable identities but as shifting roles shaped by class, labour, and expectation. By cropping the image and limiting contextual cues, I aim to disrupt familiar readings of power and desire. What remains is an invitation to linger in uncertainty and to question what, exactly, is being exchanged.
Born and raised in Canada, my education and career lead me into the field of Software Engineering. Somewhere along the way I became fascinated with the power of visual arts, and the male form, and began teaching myself to paint. I'm currently pursuing a Bachelors of Painting, while thinking about how to make painting a larger part of my life.
