Daniel de Saint-Yon
Recent review of my work by Ainhoa Fernández specialized in art criticism and communication. After working in the UK as an art gallerist, she moved to Madrid to study an MBA in art market and increase her knowledge in business, trends and art sales.
Section 1: technical review:
The artist often works with a mute but deliberate palette, neutral tones, soft flesh tones, dull whites and soft shadows dominate. This subtle use of color creates a minimalist emotional field, allowing surreal elements (like unexpected creatures or fragmented body parts) to stand out without the need for bold or saturated colors.
The artist shows a strong control over organic forms, especially the human body. The characters often feel like they are hyperreal or digitally enhanced, smooth, idealized and slightly detached. These forms are clean and carefully composed. Surrealistic elements are never fortuitous, they are inserted with an intention, often placed to disrupt the spectator’s expectation and encourage a deeper questioning.
Section 2: artistic and aesthetic aspects of the portfolio.
What is the strength of the portfolio?
The strength of his portfolio lies in his ability to perfectly combine technical precision with deep psychological depth, creating a coherent and emotionally resonant whole. Each piece invites the viewer into a surreal narrative that challenges perceptions and evokes introspection.
My favorite piece is, Yonaguni’s crab (Otomè Efira (1997-2016) - 江 平 乙 女(1997-2016), 2/4/21). The artist masterfully uses surrealistic elements, such as fragmented forms, unexpected juxtapositions and dreamlike scenarios, to delve into complex emotional and psychological themes. I think that if the current centralized compositions and the vast negative space effectively draw attention to the subject, the introduction of varied compositional strategies can add dynamism and intrigue. Experimenting with asymmetric layouts, diagonal lines or unconventional framing techniques can reinvigorate the visual narrative and engage viewers more deeply.
Section 3: the artist in the art market in terms of audience, price and estimated market potential?
The artist appeals to those who are attracted by introspective, provocative and visually clean works. The price range I estimate is €1,000-5,000. This artist sits comfortably at the intersection of fine art, editorial fashion and digital surrealism – a powerful mix for today’s market. With proper representation, marketing and networking, they could carve out a distinctive and valuable niche for themselves.
Conclusion
I think that the technical skills and aesthetic voice of this artist are strong.

Atypical painter, Daniel de Saint-Yon has never belonged to any school. Trained at the Academy of Namur, he was first seduced by the hyperrealism technique appeared in the United States at the end of the 60s, and particularly the painting by Roland Delcol regularly exhibited since 1969 at the Galerie Isy Brachot in Brussels. After having followed the workshops of Luc Perot, he left to live in Japan in 1973. Became a member of the Kokuten in 1981, he worked with the painter Ryû Oda from Himeji and initiated calligraphy with the Zen monk Tainin Yukimura in Shobara. He was also captivated by the technique of Vermeer specialist Toshiro Aoki. Back in Belgium with his Japanese wife in 1990, the painter set up his studio in Spa. Shortly before the year 2000, he embarked on abstract compositions with black ink or spots of color on white backgrounds (GUTTA) and has produced since 2010 female faces and large nudes on black backgrounds. His last large portraits in amber are those of the young Japanese woman who has been his model for five years. In April of this year, on the occasion of his birthday, he embarked with a young African model on a collaborative project of digital art ("digital paintings") which allowed him to develop his universe by pushing it further and thus prepare new works!
